Development deal includes strategic investment in Cloudant's data layer as a service

October 2, 2012

Cloudant today announced a custom development and strategic investment agreement with In-Q-Tel (IQT), the independent, nonprofit organization that identifies innovative technology solutions to support the missions of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Cloudant provides the Cloudant Data Layer as a service, a secure NoSQL-based cloud database service for developers of fast-growing web and mobile applications. The company's agreement with IQT will promote the use of Cloudant's cloud database technology within the U.S. government to more quickly build scalable applications that collect, store, analyze and distribute data in more flexible and interactive ways.

"Cloudant's background managing big data for physics research, and its scalable cloud database, gives the company potential to address a range of government challenges," said Robert Ames, Vice President in charge of Information and Communication Technologies at IQT. "We believe this partnership can help our customers build future applications that put big data and mobile technology to better use, faster."

The Cloudant Data Layer is a managed NoSQL database service for developers of fast-growing Web and mobile apps. With an Apache CouchDB-compatible, RESTful JSON API, built-in MapReduce, data replication and synch, and full-text search, Cloudant enables fast development and can distribute data across a global network of data centers or mobile devices for fault-tolerant, low-latency access to data by users anywhere.

"Cloudant is helping some of the nation's most innovative private enterprises build compelling new mobile and big data applications, and today's agreement with IQT is a vote of confidence that our technology presents significant value to the federal government as well," said Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle. "We see the potential for Cloudant's technology to enable new capabilities to collect and explore data in real time."

About Cloudant
Cloudant provides developers of large or fast-growing Web and mobile applications with the world's first globally distributed "data layer as a service" for loading, storing, analyzing, and distributing application data. The Cloudant Data Layer is a managed service that helps developers to eliminate the delays, costs, and distractions inherent in working with databases and their administrators, while providing unmatched scalability, availability, and performance. This capability accelerates time-to-market and time-to-innovation, because it frees developers from the mechanics of data management so they can focus exclusively on creating great applications. Cloudant is privately held and backed by top-tier investors including Avalon Ventures and Y Combinator. For more information, visit www.cloudant.com.
