OpenGeo, the leading commercial open source geospatial company, has entered into a strategic investment and technology development agreement with In-Q-Tel (IQT), the independent strategic investment firm that identifies innovative technology solutions to support missions of the U.S. intelligence Community (IC).
Coupled with OpenGeo's recently announced Series A investment from Vanedge Capital of Vancouver, B.C., IQT's backing will further strengthen OpenGeo's product initiatives and enable the firm to move quickly and expand its team on both the technology and service fronts.
According to OpenGeo CEO Eddie Pickle, the investment from IQT signals measurable benefits to both existing and prospective OpenGeo clients. "We are excited about what this partnership will mean for the open source community as we believe it signals the growing interest in open source software in the federal IT landscape," said Pickle. "IQT's investment further indicates the potential for using commercial open source in mission-critical government systems and applications and will enable OpenGeo to build on its leadership role for "Spatial IT.'"
The OpenGeo Suite is a complete geospatial software stack that includes an integrated spatial database, application server, and web client API, containing all of the necessary components needed to analyze and publish geospatial data. The Vanedge investment opened the door for participation by savvy venture-capital firms, and the company sees the strategic investment by IQT as further validation that OpenGeo's commercial open source Spatial IT developments are will be crucial to the future of spatial technologies.
"We believe that OpenGeo's open source Spatial IT solutions have great potential to enhance the mission of our government customers," said Robert Ames, Senior Vice President in charge of Information and Communication Technologies at IQT. "The company's geospatial products have a large range of applications that we believe will be important to both the commercial and government markets."
